Poor Clare
310 x 300 x 90mm (12½" X 12" x 3½")
mixed media assemblage
by Dale Copeland

"I know nothing of the life (or death) of the founder of the Poor Clare convents. Just playing with objects - the plaster cast I'd made from a doll's head, the graveyard hands, the worn-out wire-bristled scrubbing brush. She looked so pious, almost smug in her tattiness. I put a smear of gold foil and burning behind her head - flames and searing heat of a pure belief. I was going to call it Sanctimony, but had been calling her Poor Clare in my head for so long, she kept the name."

And I've just received an email which said "Poor Clare is very apt for this piece since you have included a wire brush. She was the saint of laundry workers."
This pleases me so much, this happy chance.
