The Missionary
mixed media assemblage
clay, leather, copper & silver on a leaden stand
I shaped the head, fired it in the woodburner & clothed it in old leather
by Dale Copeland
Meaning no disrespect to the well-intentioned individuals,
but decrying the damage done in the name of their blind faith.
Not seeing what can be lost when a whole-life totem system is replaced by a Sunday-only ritual.
I made this after seeing a little of the Aborigine communities in Australia and reading how their lives and beliefs were before missionaries (and alcolhol) arrived.
Dale's studio can be found on Surf Highway, Taranaki, New Zealand
